Notes |
- Claes Arentsen Toers served in several capacities as one of the earliest public officials in Bergen . He served as Schout ; was appointed Schouts, President and Town Clerk on 18 Aug 1673 during the period that the Dutch reoccupied New York after defeating the Engiish at sea; after earlier being appointed Court Messenger at Bergen, among other duties. The fact that he was appointed Schout in 1673 calls into question earlier records of his birth year being 1658, since he is found with parents in it is unlikely that he would receive this appointment at age 15. More likely, he was born in the mid-1640’s, as has been recently discovered thru records in the Netherlands Archive. He was appointed the second coroner of Bergen 6 Dec 1683. It is largely thru his public service and apparent literacy that we have the early history of the family.
Witness to the will of Laurens Andress Van Buskirk together with Enoch Michielsen, Proved: 19 March 1692-3.
Nelson’s History of Bergen and Passaic County notes that Claes Arentsen was most likely admitted to the bar as an attorney in 1661. The records of the courts note that he served as an attorney between 1664 and 1678, but records are limited, and undoubtedly he served in this capacity as long as he was able. Winfield’s History of Hudson County provides the dates of his appointment to posts in Bergen.
Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society, 3rd Volume, published Paterson, NJ 1899 contain several citations of his legal documents. [6]
