Notes |
- In 1881 British Census, occupation is noted as Carpenter/Joiner
According to Beverly Lathrop’s research, the family immigrated from Liverpool, England 7 Sep 1882 aboard the HMS Brittanic, and lived in Brooklyn, NY from 1882 - 1917. Her records indicate that Walter was naturalized in New York City June 21, 1888. However, other family members recall that Walter traveled back to England for some time because of business interests in England.
The UK 1901 Census has Walter and Ada living at the Hole in the Wall Inn, Hill End, Droitwich, St Nicholas. Daughters Elsie and Nelly are recorded at being born in Brooklyn, NY. The other children are recorded as being born in Bromsgrove or Droitwich. Walter’s occupation at the time is given as “Licensed Victualler”.
1910 US Census for Brooklyn, Kings, NY finds Walter G and Walter J Truss as Lodgers without family. We hold in file a copy of the ship’s List or Manifest of Alien Passengers Sailing for the United States aboard the SS Baltic, 28 May 1910, listing Ada Mary with children: Nellie, Jessie, George, Claribel, Harry, and Donald.
He is buried in Elm Grove Cemetery in the Truss plot. His headstone indicates he was a member of Odd Fellows. [1, 2, 3, 4]
